Day 1: Monkey Business

I recently started a new job. I hated it at first, but decided that I needed to be mindful and try a little harder to find the joy in the work. Essentially, I am actually very lucky to live in a city where monkey admin work pays as well as it does and very grateful to be working at all, especially right before Christmas. But it doesn’t make it any more fun and exciting.

So I have created a little affirmation when the going gets tough that reminds me how I have chosen this, and suffering is optional. So (big deep heavy sigh) “I choose to allow all my experiences to be joyous and loving.”

Much to my surprise, this has worked. I am not doing cartwheels around the office and joyously and lovingly creating spreadsheets with enthusiastic gusto or anything, but I am not hating it. And that is something. And in the spirit of seeking the good, instead of lamenting my long drive to and from work every morning, I am actually relishing the opportunity to rediscover some fabulous and forgotten music. I'm going to try five days of fabulous music, new and old.

Case in point: PJ Harvey Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea. This 2000 album is by far, the rocker goddess’ best and most commercially appealing album. It is fantastic. It was fantastic 8 years ago; it is fantastic now. It has stood the test of time. There is some whooping and hollerin’…a little bit of screeching…and a lot of rock and roll. The whores hustle, the hustles whore, oh yesyes.
